21st Century Skills

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills is a partnership of businesses and educators that focuses on integrating 21st century skills in k-12 education in an attempt prepare students for the world ahead of them. As life and the workplace is changing new skills are required for our students to be successful.

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills web site offers extensive resources including tools, database access, professional development, and publications. Under the state resources include lesson plans, assessments, and rubrics.

The site is definitely a good site to keep abreast of 21st century skills and information. I was surprised by the varied backgrounds of board members and founders. The teaching of 21st century skills is vital to our students. We as teachers will need to be creative and look to leaders like The Partnership for the 21st Century Skills to help us update our skills to we can help others.

  1. I did not see the state resources and all the items listed under it. Something that I will have to go back and look at, new lesson plans and assessments are always a great thing to have.

  2. There was a wealth of information on this site. It is definitely one to bookmark. I found the state resources to contain much information. I think in all the areas, the site covered pretty much everything-there wasn't much to be left out. It is key that we learn these skills so we can help others, especially students to prepare them for the real world.

I agree we must be leaders in education our students to be ready. Too often teachers settle on a set of lesson plans and never change them because they do not see a reason to change them. We must try to explain and model not only for student but for fellow teachers.

    Thanks for the comments.

  5. I thought the state resources that were there were very informative, but I wondered why there are so few states on board with this. It seems as though they have many good people and companies involved in this process, so I wonder why so few states. Any ideas?

  7. I am particually interested in the business connections with teaching. One teacher in a classroom of 30-38 kids can only do so much. The more adults, particularly professionally in interesting careers can make even more of an impact on that special level teachers may not be able to reach.

In the afterschool C21 program at my school, we have Kent Parks, Boeing and Guest Speakers come one day each week for an hour to help connect the kids science, physical fitness, history, etc lessons to real careers. Not everyone connects but some do and the light is very bright when it happens.

I too was surprised by the number of states involved. As to why, I am not sure. Maybe the call for the 21 Century skills has not been loud enough.

  9. The C21 program sounds great. How did the program get started? Are topics and speakers advertised and those interested stay after? I am interested in knowing more.
